Limited research on when the Angel was built reveals that it was public house, listed in Kelly's Directory of 1866, under the occupancy of a 'Thomas Akhurst'†, but it is not shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1869. This may however, be due to standards of accuracy at the time. It is not shown in Melville & Co's Directory of 1858.

Thanks to the efforts of David Augur, we are able to show you details revealing the occupants at the time of the 1871 Census.
The Angel Inn, Station Road is shown as Schedule 98 for Rainham.
Now in occupancy is John Stanbridge, with his wife, Kizer and their children Thomas and John. Also staying were two lodgers. Ellen Dangih aged 21 was born in Cranbrook. Thomas Standen was a 27 year old plasterer born in Camberwell, London (rural Surrey in those days!!).
John Stanbridge, 59, was born in Goudhurst in 1812. He is recorded as a ‘Victualler and Farmer with 3 acres’. His wife Kizer, aged 58, was from Salehurst in Sussex, and was born in 1813. Further research, though show a 58 year old Kizer Stanbridge, also in the 1871 census, living in Milton. If this is the same person, had they now separated about the time of the census and was recorded by John as still living at the Angel?
Thomas, 16, was born in Maidstone in 1855. He is shown as the stepson to the Head of the Household, so it may be assumed that Kizer was previously married.Young John Stanbridge though, is shown as the son of John. He is 15 at the time of the Census, so was born in 1856 in Kent, but the town is not decipherable, but I have taken this to be Langley. This brings into question as to how old young John and Thomas were when the elder John and Kizer married.
